The Man o’ War

Video Request by Inverse

What you are seeing here are the powerful stinging tentacles of the man o’ war. The man o’ war is not actually a jellyfish, but a siphonophore. Nor is it a singular organism, but rather a whole colony of minute zooids that each perform different tasks like stinging, feeding, and floating. Their iconic purple gas-filled float acts like a sail on the ocean’s surface where it’s at the whim of the winds, and is often seen washed up on beaches. They have a dangerously powerful sting, so be careful if you see one on the beach, as there will probably be more nearby in the water. If you look very closely you’ll notice a tiny man o’ war fish (Nomeus gronovii) swimming through its tentacles where it is immune from stings and can seek protection from larger prey. (film by Coral Morphologic and Music by Geologist (Animal Collective)).
